Drift Diver

Why turn around?

Diving in current can sound like a daunting experience and makes many divers nervous when trying it for the first time. Surprisingly, it’s actually one of the easiest ways of diving and can be super fun if you have a basic understanding and knowledge of tides and currents as well as some essential tips and techniques that make “going with the flow” an absolute breeze, especially in the south of Bonaire.

Learn the joys of one-way diving

Scuba diving in a current can be both relaxing and exhilarating. You may slowly glide over a reef, or zoom over an underwater landscape so fast it feels like flying. By the end of your drift diver course, you’ll have the skills you need to confidently go with the flow. Diving in a current can feel like flying underwater. In the PADI® Drift Diver course, you’ll learn drift diving tips from an experienced instructor and practice buoyancy control, navigation, use of surface signaling equipment and buddy communication.

Drift diving brings with it significant advantages – like being able to access different dive sites and explore larger areas – but there are also some additional considerations.

  • Planning where to enter/exit and contingencies
  • Buoyancy control while constantly in motion
  • Streamlining to prevent entanglements
  • Sheltering when you’re tired and how to find resting places
  • Current indicators at varying depths
  • Deploying surface markers are critical to being picked up if boat diving
