The lionfish is an invasive species in the Caribbean. Because they don’t have any natural predators here, they have the chance to multiply quickly, overtaking and killing native species, which results in a huge danger for the local environment and aquatic life on Bonaire. To control this invasion, hunting lionfish is only allowed under strict rules.
The only legal option to hunt lionfish on Bonaire is through a dive operator and only when using marine park authorized spears (for which we have a special contract). The Lionfish Hunter Specialty consists of a knowledge development session, practice using the hunting tools and two training dives actually hunting lionfish. You will receive a PADI Lion Fish Hunter specialty card recognized by STINAPA Bonaire (National Park Foundation Bonaire) and more importantly: you will contribute to keeping our reefs healthy.
We teach the Lionfish Hunter Specialty in small groups of maximum 4 people, so you will get all the personal attention you need before, during and after the course.
The entire course takes one full day.
“My husband and I took the Lionfish Hunting specialty certification at VIP and had the best experience. Our instructor and his intern were wonderful. In addition to teaching us about lionfish and how to hunt them, the instructor gave my husband important tips on how to conserve air. He didn't have to help outside of the course instruction, but we so appreciate that VIP and their instructors go above and beyond.”
