Lionfish Hunter

1 Day

2 Dives

Why hunt Lionfish?

The lionfish is an invasive species in the Caribbean. Because they don’t have any natural predators here, they have the chance to multiply quickly, overtaking and killing native species, which results in a huge danger for the local environment and aquatic life in Bonaire. To control this invasion, hunting lionfish is allowed under strict rules.

Learn a Speciality, Protect the Reef

The only legal option to hunt lionfish in Bonaire is through a dive operator and only when using marine park authorized spears (for which we have a special contract). The PADI Lionfish Hunter specialty consists of a knowledge development session, practice using the hunting tools during a dry workshop and two training dives actually hunting lionfish. You will receive a PADI Lionfish Hunter distinctive specialty card recognized by STINAPA Bonaire (National Park Foundation Bonaire) and more importantly: you will contribute to keeping our reefs healthy.

We teach the Lionfish Hunter Specialty in small groups of maximum 4 people, so you will get all the personal attention you need before, during and after the course.

The entire course takes one full day.

Note: Spearing a Lionfish is not a course requirement due to the nature of the activity. Our dry spearing workshop will prepare you for the hunt, but we can never guarantee you will locate or spear a Lionfish.
